Classical conditioning
Understand the model, recognise it in a stem, separate the look-alikes, then apply it.
Start with the mental model
Classical conditioning is cue-learning: a neutral signal becomes meaningful because it reliably arrives with something that already produces an automatic response. For example, a bell that repeatedly precedes food eventually makes a dog salivate before the food appears. In practice, the exam trick is to ask whether the response is elicited by a cue, rather than chosen because of a consequence.

01Core model
Start with an unconditioned stimulus, such as food, naturally producing an unconditioned response, such as salivation. Pair a neutral stimulus, such as a bell, with that food often enough, and the bell becomes the conditioned stimulus; salivation to the bell alone becomes the conditioned response. Acquisition strengthens the association. Extinction happens when the conditioned stimulus is repeatedly presented without the unconditioned stimulus, so the response falls. Modern learning accounts treat extinction as new inhibitory learning, not simple erasure, which explains why spontaneous recovery can appear after a rest period. Generalisation spreads the response to similar cues; discrimination narrows it to the exact predictive cue.

**Classical conditioning links a cue to an automatic response; extinction suppresses that response without necessarily deleting the original learning.** Consider a patient whose nausea returns when entering a chemotherapy suite after earlier treatment-related sickness. The room has become a conditioned cue. If repeated safe visits reduce the nausea, that is extinction; if nausea returns after a long gap, spontaneous recovery is not mysterious failure, but the old association resurfacing. Clinically, this is why exposure-based treatments plan for relapse and renewal rather than promising that fear learning has been wiped clean.
