Memory retrieval types
Understand the model, recognise it in a stem, separate the look-alikes, then apply it.
Start with the mental model
**Every 'memory test' actually taps one of several different retrieval processes, and which one is used decides whether the same underlying memory looks present or absent**. Recognition (pick it out of a lineup) is easiest, because the answer is right there to be judged; cued recall (get a hint) is harder, because the answer must be generated; free recall (no help at all) is hardest of all. Layered on top of that ladder, retrieval also depends on getting back the conditions present when the memory was formed — the same room (context-dependent memory) or the same internal state (state-dependent memory) can each independently unlock recall that otherwise stays stuck. The exam question is almost never 'did this person remember' — it is which specific retrieval process, or which specific retrieval-failure phenomenon, the vignette is actually describing.

01Core model
• Free recall, cued recall and recognition form a difficulty ladder from hardest to easiest: free recall gives no prompt and requires generating the answer from nothing; cued recall gives a prompt (a category, a letter, half a pair) and still requires generating the answer; recognition presents the answer itself among foils and only requires judging old-versus-new. The same stored memory can pass a recognition test and fail a free recall test, because the RETRIEVAL DEMAND differs, not necessarily the amount actually stored.
• The relearning (savings) method sidesteps conscious retrieval altogether: material is learned again after a delay, and the reduction in trials or time needed versus the original learning is the index of what was retained — Ebbinghaus's method for plotting the forgetting curve, and capable of detecting memory even when both recall and recognition fail outright.
• Tulving's encoding specificityThe proportion of people who truly do not have a condition that a test correctly identifies as negative.Read more → principle is the umbrella rule behind two named phenomena: a retrieval cue works only if it was genuinely present, in some form, at encoding. Context-dependent memory is the external-environment case (the classic diving study: word lists learned underwater are recalled better underwater than on land, and vice versa); state-dependent memory is the internal-state case (material learned intoxicated is recalled better intoxicated again than sober).
• The tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon is a specific, temporary retrieval failure: the person is certain they know the answer and can often report partial features (first letter, syllable count) even though the full item will not come — evidence the item is stored and partially accessible, not forgotten.
• Implicit (procedural) memory is retrieval with no conscious recollection at all, shown only through changed task performance (priming, a learned skill) — different in kind from every explicit process above, even the indirect ones like relearning, since relearning still uses an explicit re-exposure task.

02Recognise it in an SBA
- A vignette in which no hint, cue, or option is given, and the person must produce the answer from nothing, is describing free recall.
- A vignette in which a prompt (a category, the first letter, one half of a pair) is given and the person still has to produce the answer, is describing cued recall.
- A vignette in which the answer itself is presented among distractors and the person only judges old-versus-new, is describing recognition.
- A vignette in which someone fails to recall or recognise material outright, yet learns it faster the second time, is describing the relearning (savings) method.
- A vignette in which recall changes with the physical location or surroundings is describing context-dependent memory; one in which recall changes with the person's own internal state (intoxication, mood) is describing state-dependent memory.
- A vignette describing certainty of knowing plus genuine partial information (first letter, number of syllables) that will not resolve into the full answer is describing the tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon.

What people get wrong here
- ⚠️ Assuming a person who fails free recall has 'lost' the memory — recognition testing or the relearning method can reveal it is still there, just not retrievable without more support.
- Confusing context-dependent memory (external environment) with state-dependent memory (internal state) whenever a scenario mentions 'the same situation', without checking whether the matched factor is the physical surroundings or the person's own physiology or mood.
- Reaching for the generic encoding specificityThe proportion of people who truly do not have a condition that a test correctly identifies as negative.Read more → principle when a stem actually manipulates a specific named phenomenon (context- or state-dependent memory) that has its own more precise name.
- Naming the serial position effect when a question is asking which retrieval TYPE is being illustrated, simply because the scenario happens to involve free recall of a list.
- Treating tip-of-the-tongue as ordinary forgetting — the defining feature is genuine partial access (first letter, syllable count) alongside certainty of knowing, not mere failure to answer.
- Assuming a vivid, confident (flashbulb) memory must be an accurate one — confidence and accuracy are measured separately, and flashbulb memories are demonstrably not immune to distortion.
