Functional behavioural analysis

Why does a behavioural therapist ask what happened immediately before and after a behaviour, rather than just describing the behaviour itself? Functional behavioural analysis is a behavioural-therapy technique that identifies the FUNCTION a behaviour serves for a person, meaning the reinforcement (a consequence that makes a behaviour more likely to happen again) that maintains it, rather than only describing what the behaviour looks like (its topography). For example, imagine a young man with a severe learning disability who repeatedly hits staff whenever he is asked to do a task he finds difficult, and staff notice the demand is always withdrawn once he hits out; a functional behavioural analysis identifies escape from an aversive demand, not aggression as a trait, as the function the hitting serves. In practice, this means treatment targets the reinforcement that is keeping the behaviour going (for example, teaching a different way to signal 'I want a break') rather than only trying to suppress the behaviour itself, which tends to fail if the underlying function is never addressed.
Functional behavioural analysis works by systematically recording the antecedent (what happens immediately before the behaviour, the trigger), the behaviour itself, and the consequence (what happens immediately after, and specifically what reinforces it) — often summarised as ABC (antecedent-behaviour-consequence) charting. This can be done descriptively, through naturalistic direct observation across several occasions, or experimentally, through a structured functional analysis that systematically varies the environment across conditions (for example, alone, attention, demand, and play/control conditions) to see under which condition the target behaviour occurs most, directly testing hypotheses about its function rather than only observing and guessing. Four broad functions are commonly described: positive reinforcement via attention (the behaviour reliably brings social attention), negative reinforcement via escape or avoidance (the behaviour removes or avoids an aversive demand or situation), positive reinforcement via access to a tangible item or activity (the behaviour gains a preferred object or activity), and automatic or sensory reinforcement (the behaviour is reinforcing in itself, regardless of other people's presence or response, such as some repetitive self-stimulatory behaviours). Once the function is identified, treatment is built around it: for example, teaching a functionally equivalent replacement behaviour that achieves the same reinforcement through an acceptable route (such as teaching a communication card requesting a break, if the function is escape), and ensuring the environment no longer reinforces the original behaviour for that same function. This approach underpins UK guidance on managing behaviour that challenges in people with a learning disability or autism, where it is recommended before any intervention is planned, and shares its behavioural root with related techniques used more broadly in psychotherapy, such as behavioural chain analysis in dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT).

He's still kicking it alone at 3am, nothing stuck, nobody watching -> automatic/sensory reinforcement: reinforcing in itself regardless of anyone's presence. 5. Guards ban the kicking outright without ever reviewing the tape -> suppressing the behaviour without addressing its function tends to fail. 6. Guards fit a 'press here if jammed' button instead -> function-based treatment: a replacement behaviour giving the same reinforcement through an acceptable route.
